-------------------

This was actually part of a larger all day show which started a noon and featured about 20 or so bands. It all happened at a place called Dad's House, which seems to be a couple of rented out houses run by a collective of local scene people who put on shows. We got there at 8:00pm and waited around a bit till Snowing started their set. I picked up some merch, (which you can see the loot above), in the mean time. I guess its a sign of getting old when one is at a show and thinks, "why does it have to be so loud?" And I say this because the warbbly overly loud bass coming from the amps and bouncing around that small room, blocks out so much of the detail of the music, including the vocals. Snowing was tight, and luckily for me I was familiar with the songs and I'm glad I got to see them, but you could barely hear the vocals...it's a shame. 1994!'s sound was even worse. They already play a pretty fast and chaotic Mathy Post-Hardcore style, which even on their recording they are a bit muddy and the vocals have a hard time piercing through. But I could see the singer screaming his head off and I couldn't hear one bit of his voice over the rumble of ricocheting bass in that small room. They were tight and fuck though, and the drummer is an animal! And finally for Algernon Cadwallader, which I knew were bound to sound better since they use no distortion on the guitar. I was right, because they completely nailed it last night. The vocals were still a bit cloudy but they pierced through much better than the previous two bands. AC proved to me last night why they are the leaders in the NWOTDE movement (New Wave of Twinkle Daddy Emo!) I totally lost my self when they started playing, and was dancing and leaping around like a lunatic! I had a blast, unfortunately they only got to play for half an hour due to time constraints, but what a half an hour of pure youthful energy that was! Thank you Snowing, 1994! and especially AC for coming to my town, since we rarely get bands like that coming out to the middle of the desert to show us what the Real Emo stuff is all about....

May 2011 album reviews

Liturgy - Aesthetica 2LP

So here we have the highly anticipated brand new album by the most controversial band in Black Metal. Remember the days when Darkthrone or Burzum were the most controversial bands, due to sketchy nationalistic leanings? Well I guess that's old hat because what you really need to do to cause a stir these days is be (or at least look like) a hipster, create a Black Metal manifesto and preach to the legions of the BM elite how much more you know about BM than they do. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix is just such a fellow and boy has he been creating waves of hate and has become BM enemy number one, plus the target of ridicule amongst many in the scene. I personally don't see anything wrong with taking a more intellectual stance on Black Metal, wanting to take it to higher level of seriousness beyond its origins of Satan and Sacrifice. The dude seems awfully excited about the genre and he took it upon himself to write up a long ass manifesto explaining his feelings on the matter and how much the music touches him on a spiritual level. Black Metal has always been spiritual music to me though, a lot of us have already been there done that years ago. That's cool though, I can appreciate his youthful enthusiasm for the genre, and I know as well as anyone who's been "touched" by the spirit of Black Metal that it's a powerful force that makes you want to shout your feelings on the matter at the top of mountain and then conquer the world in the name of Black fucking Metal! I get that Hunter is a pretty intelligent and well-educated individual, but what Hunter has failed to realize is that Black Metal is not a school project. It is not there to be deconstructed, viewed in general terms, re-assembled in fragments and then handed in as a 5-page essay to maintain your GPA. It is not something over which you can reason with other individuals. Black Metal is very personal and "individualistic" experience for everyone. It is a realm of your own making, in which you sprout wings and lord over it on your own terms. At the end of the day, I'm really not all that bothered by HHH's opinions and antics, it's the art that counts. For good or worse, HHH has now become a "character" in the ever expanding stage of BM. Black Metal has always been full of "characters" that have been, eccentric, loony, unhinged, criminal, pretentious try-hards, even flat out liars, this dates back to Euronymous and Varg and even earlier with the ever peculiar Quorthon. But you know?... I tend to like my musicians to be a little off beat, queer and even a little controversial, they are the unconventional force that have keep the creative BM flame alive. So what we have left is the ART itself and does Liturgy put their money where their mouth is? I'd say a resounding YES! Their first album (Renihilation) had a loose style of fast and soaring melodies (that almost sounded like they were improvised), built over stop-and-go drum patterns that conjured the heaving sounds of a hurricane. It showed promise but I wasn't blown away nor was it anything original in the least. Actually that first album reminded me a lot of the rolling blast & scream style of Anal Cunt in a funny way, hehe. So now we finally get to Aesthetica. Which to my summation demonstrates huge improvement over their debut. It's much tighter for one, riffs are more distinguishable and intractably layered. The production is liquid gold, the music shines bright and it's much more complimentary to their ceaseless and perplexing style. The dueling noodly riffs are just as lightening fast, but they show more sophistication and purpose this time around. The superimposed guitar lines weave gorgeous melodies together that sound like streaks of light racing up through the sky and out the stratosphere! One of my complaints with their debut was that the songs were, for the most part, makeshift bursts and blasts with disorganized structure. While Aesthetica still has plenty speed going on, there are more breaks and bends into other tempos giving the songs more shape and contour. I'll say Liturgy has made remarkable progression here, and they've also developed a sound all their own with trademark deliberations that are distinctly, Liturgy. The track "Returner" is a fine example of what this band is capable of. Starting with an immediate, scatter rhythmic passage that liquefies into triumphant phrasing that reminds me of some of the lullaby anthems of the Cardiacs! They hook back around to the mathy intro riffs, and then throw in a bit of blasting interwoven between the complex rhythms and the escalating melodies that increase the ensuing epicness, ...until the exultant ending that leaves me breathless! A song like this is why I love BM so much, and is evident as to why Liturgy chooses BM as a medium to deliver on their mission of 'transcendental' enlightenment. The song "True Will" has a moment of pure ecstasy when they build to a radiant, hammering drone at the 3:30 minute mark and carry it for a good 40 seconds before that moment of orgasmic release. It's little maneuvers like this that make the album enjoyable for me, and I still haven't fully absorbed Aesthetica in its entirety yet. I have a feeling this is going to be the feel-good album of the summer for me! I will say there is a bit of gristle on this album that could have been trimmed or intermingled a little more tactfully. You have a few instrumental cuts like "Generation" and "Veins of Gold" that offer some variation and are nice breathers between the main cuts, but I skip past "Veins of Gold" and find it to be a bland attempt at something "Doomy" or "True Metalish." Not sure what the purpose is with that track, but it's overly long and really sucks the energy out of the album IMO. You also have a twiddly little synthy track "Helix Skull" which acts as a midway point and an intro to the second half of the album (or second LP to the 2LP set) it's nothing remarkable, but at least it doesn't linger too long either. And then you have "Glass Earth," a layered chorus of psychedelic folksy chanting that acts as a zen like springboard that launches finale of the album "Harmonia." That track is a winner and a very appropriate one-two punch way to end the album IMO. It's a shame that a lot of people already have their minds made up about this band/album before even giving it a chance. But everyone has their own hang-ups are and can't see the art past the artists shenanigans. But of course you'll have plenty that will hate it because its not their type of BM to begin with, and that's okay. For me personally, it would be hard for me NOT to like this album and it would go against the essence of my being to hate it for the sake of "Black Metal integrity" or some other silly shit like that. This is a fine album indeed, one of the better BM albums of the year so far. And while I have no desire to defend the verbal romp of Mr HHH (once again I state, I don't subscribe to his harangues) but I will stand up for the music of Aesthetica, which turned out to be one hell of an impressive album.

Deafheaven - Roads To Judah CD 2011

Another one of those new BM bands that the members obviously come outside the world of BM. For that alone people will ignite the hate without ever giving them a chance. No matter, because this band is actually huge already due to internet buzz plus the flighty devouring youth DLing their album 10 times faster than anyone can buy them. The plan here with Deafheaven seems to be a melting pot of Post-Rock, Shoegaze, Screamo and of course Black Metal. Honestly Deafheaven doesn't offer a progressive take on any of those genres and nothing on this album will come off as anything surprising. The songs always utilize the typical Post-Rock climb (sometimes at the beginning, other times during a midway break), the expected tremolo picking playing a melody with the longing sappy atmosphere that eventually explodes into long stretches of blasting Black Metal, over top a melody that's in the same key and chord structure of the instrumental parts. The entire album is pretty two dimensional (hey, two is better than one, right?), a bit too predictable with the two distinct sides they play up. The vocals are actually pretty one dimensional too; if they be influenced by Screamo at all I'd hope they be more expressive in the vocal department at least, but I guess not, pretty bland. I feel their strength actually lies in the slower more "Post-Rock" side, as the blasting BM parts for my money seem to last just a little too long, I'd like to hear more tempo shifts and not have it be so 'by-the-numbers': here's the Post-Rock part and here's the blasting BM part, wash, rinse, repeat! With that said the transitions between the two dimensions of this band do sound fairly natural and don't come off as jarring and forced...keeping the melodic arrangements samey helps with that. I also do like the drumming on this album, the guy hits hard and during the ascending blasting passages, his accents on the cymbals and the how he almost seems to loose himself in the battery on the kit, he really provides a much needed emotional injection into the formula. The production on this album is also massive, the guitars have a nice shimmery quality but are also full and loud. And of course the drum tuning is big, round and enveloping. If the production were any thinner, I think it would have lost much of its power. At the end of the day, I do enjoy this album but I don't see myself looking back 10 years from now thinking this was anything but one of the many' doing this style in 2011, perhaps just a slight cut above the rest?...maybe, maybe not...only time will tell. I'll be curious if this band is in it for the long haul, or if they're just hoppers of a trend, and so the history of Black Metal rolls on...I love being a seasoned old time observer, bring on the next flavor of the month!

Nuit Noire Interview 5/08/2011

Most of you who know me well and my taste in music, also know that I've been enthusiastically following the trail of fairy dust left behind Faerical Blasting Black Metal Punk band known as Nuit Noire for nearly a decade now. I absolutely adore this band, and continue snatch up everything Mr Tenebras and co. release. When I first heard Lunar Deflagration, so much of what I looked for in music was found within this one band. They are melodic, raw, fantastical, epic, effeminate, innocent, youthful, one of a kind, Black Metal but on the outer fringe....etc. They are a pentacle in my life and am honored to be able to lay down an interview with main Fairy behind the band, Mr Tenebras.

Mithy: The first and an all around basic question: What do we have to look forward to with Nuit Noire in 2011? Plans, recordings, upcoming releases, live shows, etc??

Tenebras: The brand new album called "The Gigantic Hideout" has been finished recently and i hope i can release it soon. Then hopefully Nuit Noire will get on stage again, with what was going on in my personal life this past year it has been to hard to deal with it, but it should be better in the months to come.

Mithy: What happened with the Nuit Noire Demos 2CD that was supposed to come out on Todestrieb, and is there still plans to release this?

Tenebras: I honestly doubt that Todestrieb will ever release it, it seems that a lot of chaos went in the label owner's life those past years and i don't have any hope anymore about it. But the french label Those Opposed Records and i are being working on a triple-lp version of the demo tapes right now.

Mithy: I also recall a split with Trist was in the works as well as a tape called Pleine Lune, is this stuff still in the works or have these tracks been siphoned off to other releases?

Tenebras: Jan from Trist told me not so long ago that there was a big delay but our split-ep is not an abandoned project, and for the "Pleine Lune" tape i haven't had any news from "Drug Money Records" for a very long time, i don't know what to say about it for now.

Mithy: I as well as others really loved the Lady Gaga cover, it was
completely out of left field yet oh so appropriate for NN, any
particular reason why you chose to cover "Paparazzi"? And any other obtuse cover songs you might have plan to spring on us?

Tenebras: I just really liked this song from Lady Gaga, and it was a good
occasion to schock people and eventually get insulted, but
(un)fortunately i just had good direct feedbacks, and more than that
many people finally felt confident to assume their admiration for
Gaga after it, i thought i was the only one... Let's see if i do more attempts like this in the future or not.

Mithy: Nuit Noire has always been a unique entity, when I first heard your band in 2003 with "Lunar Deflagration" not only did I instantly fall in love with the band but I was trying to figure what other bands you might have been influenced by, a lot of it seemed outside the realms of Black Metal...stuff that I could almost put my finger on but could never place completely. So tell me what were your musical inspirations when you first started Nuit Noire, and what are they now (if any.) ?

Tenebras: When i got into black metal in the mid 90's, i wasn't especially into the classic "inner circle" ones, but i got into them later on. In the beginning i was very into the austrian scene, Abigor, Summoning, etc, and also bands like Ancient, Master's Hammer, Nastrond, Mütiilation, Arkham... Besides it i have been listening to classic cold wave like The Sisters Of Mercy and Fields Of The Nephilim. Also the 80's music i was listening from my parents vinyl records when i was a child has been capital for sure, this coldness, this melancholy, this transcendental aspect in the ambiances, the melodies, something that disappeared later on and finally reappeared those last years in the mainstream electro-dancefloor music especially, see some works from David Guetta, some Sophie Ellis Bextor's featuring, some Nelly Furtado's, Nadia Ali's, Greg Parys'... I also love the old pioneers of punk rock, and Nirvana. Anything could catch my ears, i cannot plan what i will like or not.

Mithy: So tell me, how do you get that otherworldly guitar tone and a set of dreamlike riffs to match the mini-Epic nature of each fairy anthem you write? Does each tune take a while to conceive or does it just come to you in a dream by the visiting fairies of the night!?

Tenebras: I have a self-modified cheap Jackson guitar that has, very important, a NON-agressive-loud-metal sound, then a chain of Boss pedals (Noise Supressor, Metal Zone, Super Shifter and Digital Delay 6) and some transistor Valvestate Marshall amps from the 90's. In general melodies or words with melodies arrive from nowhere in my mind, it gives me the main aspect of the song, and then there is a big work of thinking how i will settle the structure of the song for it to just flow like a shooting star.

Mithy: Is there anything else that inspires Nuit Noire outside of music, like for instance, Art, Film, Literature, Politics, Religion, Nature, Drugs, Sex, etc, etc....?

Tenebras: Anything could inspire me, really, but it is always transcripted into the Nuit Noire "mythology". Also it happens that i write things coming from nowhere, innocently, just night fantasies, and then i realise that they could be metaphors for real things of the everyday life, and sometimes they are embarrassing...

Mithy: The running theme for Nuit Noire has been Fairies and the mischievous essence of the night, but is there any underlying political or philosophical motive behind Nuit Noire's music? And on the subject of Fairies in your music, could you explain the deeper meaning behind such ideas and motifs?

Tenebras: Initially there is absolutely not any underlying motive, i just wanna put in words some visions, some nocturnal fantasies with moon and fairies, in order to go away from this disgusting human world we live in. But somehow i hope that what i write encourages people to dream and to stop being stuck to their material world, to stop relying on their human senses to judge things, and instead trying to perceive the pieces of fäerie hidden everywhere. Fairies and Fäerie are those little things that make you being more than a simple human, and more you spread your Fäerie more your Fäerie gets big, it is an unlimited resource.

Mithy: Nuit Noire at this point in time has built up a healthy discography over the past decade or so. Nuit Noire started as a quaint and quirky melodic Black Metal band, but throughout the years you've blossomed into something wholly a style all your own. Was this always your intention with Nuit Noire or has this just been a natural progression of your creative spirit?

Tenebras: It wasn't at all my intention in the beginning, i would never have imagined that Nuit Noire would turn into this, but it happened. It just happened. I don't know how, i don't know why. It wasn't planned or decided and i like it.

Mithy: Do you still consider Nuit Noire to be a Black Metal band, be it on the fringe?

Tenebras: I never claimed that Nuit Noire is a black metal project, it has some attributes that you can find in black metal, but it is the case for many old school punk bands. Nevertheless, my band sounded like that in the beginning a lot because i was very into black metal, but i also wanted to be myself and not part of a brotherhood.

Mithy: As I'm sure you know, your music isn't for everyone, and has undoubtedly been a polarizing band especially amongst Black Metal fans. Any thoughts on this?

Tenebras: People into black metal are very divided on Nuit Noire, some love it like crazy and some think that it is the worst thing ever made. This last decade has appeared a new genre of listener who listens to black metal and also a lot of other things, some music lovers in fact, and i think that my band has a lot of followers among them. But also some pure black metallers like it, why? I don't know. I think that it is very hard to guess who will like it or not, and i'm proud of that.

Mithy: I believe BM to be the most malleable from of Metal there is, while there will always be room for tradition, I've always found myself attracted to bands who stretch the boundaries and defy conventions, dating as far back as Abruptum, Necromantia, Root, Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende, and so forth. Any thoughts on this?....do you have any staunch positions on what defines Black Metal?

Tenebras: I like to be surprised and even schocked by what i'm listening to, and among all the forms of metal, black metal is for sure the one comporting the most surprising bands and the one that has the biggest number of forms, that is the most evolutive, but... what is black metal? Everytime i was asked this in an interview i had to give a different answer because my definition of black metal always evolve, it is something so huge and that goes so much above the sound itself... In the beginning this term "black metal" was created by Venom but it was just for the fun, and years later Euronymous appropriated it to himself to tag his music that was filled with darkness and evil, and then a whole scene emerged being very serious about it, it wasn't for the fun. Then the scene evolved, many branches appeared, and really, i am still torn in two. On one side i wonder if black metal is those pioneers around Euronymous and all those who do exactly the same thing now to perpetrate the tradition, on the other side i wonder if it is a form of metal made by evil sick-minded people, however it sounds. I just don't know.

Mithy: France has a strong Black Metal history, France has also
produced some of the strongest and most unique Black Metal bands over
the past decade or so. I'd also say even outside of BM, France has an above average track record for great music in multiple genres. Is
there something about France that births individuals who have a knack
for creating such great music? And just out of personal curiosity
I'd also ask if you are familiar with the godly band Magma and the
Zeuhl style of Progressive Rock?(which is a huge French musical
export.)

Tenebras: France also has a lot of uninteresting bands who just make music to
imitate the ones they like the most, those bands start with ads like
"guitarist and bassist search for a drummer and a singer to make music
in the same style than..." and then you see written a list of
well-known bands. Believe me there are a lot of them here, they are the
most numerous. But fortunately, here and there you have some musicians
who start with an original idea, a different feeling, and they put it
into music with their own competences and musical heritage. Just in my
area, Toulouse, we have the mighty Punish Yourself, the transcendental
Call Me Loretta, the amazing Cats On Trees, the eccentric Kakavolante,
the crazy Miss Edith, the stunning Artemisia Absinthium... and farther
in France we have things like Suricates, Cocorosie, Diapsiquir...
France is a country where people are not patriotic at all, we hate our
system and our government, and our traditional religion, christianity,
is almost inexistant, some people just use churches to make marriages
and baptisms prettier. You'll never see french people raising a french
flag and screaming "God bless France". This context maybe encourages
the emergence of free spirits here and there, and when one of them
strongly wants to make music, then an interesting non-formated project
may appear. But France has its big lot of people watching stupid TV
shows, do not think that France is a land of philosophers and
smart-romantic-highly-cultivated people.
Concerning Magma, i'm sorry to tell you that i really didn't click with
the few things i heard from them, i'm totally conscious of their
amazing musicianship and creativity but it is not my cup of tea.

Mithy: Interesting answer, and I shouldn't have expected anything
different. Other French folks that I know aren't very nationalistic
either, and usually don't toot their own horns in regard to their
musical exports. "No man is a prophet in his own country" ...eh? I
tend to gravitate towards a lot of French bands (BM and beyond) but an
outsiders perspective looking in will always be different than the
natives. Some people have said New Mexico has a lively music scene,
but aside from a few bands, I think it stinks here....and so it goes,
hehe.

Tenebras: Oh but i want to precise that, even if i don't especially like Magma, they fill out the concert venues here. But it is true that when Nuit Noire plays somewhere in France, the organizers and their friends are the only ones who know us. And when it happens that we play in a foreign country, we almost sell out all the merchandizing we have with us each time.

Mithy: You mentioned Old Punk a couple times, are there any
particular bands that are your favorites? And with that are there any current bands (BM or otherwise) that you'd highly recommend to followers of Nuit Noire?

Tenebras: It would be hard for me to quote some bands that i was talking about in
those previous answers, i'm mostly into the pionneer ones like the
Stooges or the Ramones, but it happened to me to be in parties where
old school 80's punk bands were played on the stereo, or friends having
me listening to some music, and it just sounded like some old school
black metal, fast rythms, insane chords and scorched hatred vocals, but
could we call it black metal? That's why it is really hard to define
black metal.
Let's quote now some random bands that caught my ears lastly: Total
Racoon, Tenek, Ruth Veln Kiss, Duflan Duflan, Le Prince Harry, Il
Fulgurante, Shiva And The Dead Men, Fosse Commune, Dissiped, Grand Popo
Footbal Club, Les Soldes, Danse Of The Dead...

Mithy: I used to imagine you as some eccentric, androgynous dude who runs around in a red cape and in your underwear, carrying around a wand pretending to shoot fairy dust at people all day long, but I know thats not true. So to shed a bit of mystery behind the persona known as Tenebras, what is it you do for a living? Are you married or in relationship? What is your average day like? Would the people that know you best consider you eccentric or weird? Or just a regular friendly kind of guy?

Tenebras: I'm married, have three kids at home and have the same job since 1999
at the Airbus factory. Nothing particular at the first view but we are
the type of family eating at exotic restaurants, bringing the kids at
the playgrounds late at night, sometimes the dad (me) plays guitar in
his bedroom, isolates himself to write lyrics, mixes his songs in the
middle of the living-room, and he loves his texan wife a lot. Let's say
that i am an eccentric friendly guy.

Mithy: Oh, so your wife is from Texas? neat! (My neighboring state)
If it's not too personal of a question, how did you two
meet?...considering the huge geological gap. And is your wife a fan of
your music?

Tenebras: My wife has a myspace and, one day, a french myspace-friend of her advised her to visit the Nuit Noire page. She did, she liked it and let me a comment, that's how we started to talk. She is the only one girl i got thanks to my music, funny isn't it? She already had two kids and we made another one. We all live here in France.

Mithy: Give me a thought or two on these bands:
-Deathspell Omega
-Liturgy
-Venom
-Public Image Limited
-Siouxsie and the Banshees
-The Velvet Underground
-King Crimson
-Daniel Johnston
-Pagan Altar
-Rites of Spring

Tenebras:
-Deathspell Omega
High musicianship but i don't feel soul in it, i find it boring and, when i want to hear music like this, i rather play "Wolf's Lair Abyss" by Mayhem.
-Liturgy
I'm just discovering it, the one from New York, and it is impressive, really, i'm quite stunned!
-Venom
I just know the early era and it is still very good.
-Public Image Limited
Never heard before but very good!
-Siouxsie and the Banshees
The old songs i know are great.
-The Velvet Underground
I have the debut album and i love it, it was even planned that Nuit
Noire plays "Sunday Morning" on stage, we practiced it but never
decided to make it during a show yet.
-King Crimson
The few i know from them is really nice.
-Daniel Johnston
Amazing crazy man!
-Pagan Altar
I'm just discovering them, it reminds me some Black Sabbath among
others and it's good.
-Rites of Spring
Discovering this too, big energy, i like it!

Mithy: Yeah, I just threw some random bands out there. Great to
see you know of the childlike genius of Daniel Johnston. And I mention
Liturgy cause they seem to be the most controversial BM band at the
moment. Their new album is pretty good IMO, they've really developed
into their own sound from their previous record. HHH (Hunter
Hunt-Hendrix) is a controversial guy with strong (and at times naive)
statements on BM, and while I don't agree with much of what he says, I
appreciate when someone comes along and rocks the perpetual boat in the
world of Black Metal. After all BM is built on the backs of
controversial and eccentric personalities, am I right? ...dating back
to Euro and Varg, and even dating back further to Quorthon, who never
completely played with a full deck.

Tenebras: Oh yes the pionneers of black metal were not the formated black metallers that appeared afterwards having the typical black metaller life, Euro and Varg were themselves. Just like Christian Death and The Sisters Of Mercy had no idea that they would become the pionneers of this gothic/batcave fashion, they were something unique in their time and invented something without knowing.

Mithy: Are you involved in any other musical (or artistic) projects? And on a side note do you ever see Nuit Noire calling it quits? (I
hope not!) Or will you exist forever!

Tenebras: Nowadays Nuit Noire is my only one active project and, and as long as
i'll be able to handle a guitar i'll continue. Nuit Noire is me, i am
Nuit Noire, it cannot stop if i'm still alive.

Mithy: Yes!
And finally, if Nuit Noire were a dish, what would it be?

Tenebras: It would probably be a vegetarian sweet and salty plate with tofu,
lentils and some spices, something original, that makes you feel really
good and doesn't upset your stomach. Some people would love it and some
others would prefer to have a classic stupid steak with french frites.

Mithy: It's been an honor and thank you very much for this great
interview, I along with many other followers of the great Fairy will
always be looking forward to new Nuit Noire material...!

Tenebras: Thank you very much for this conversation, and hopefully the brand new album will be released before this summer. May the night surround you!

Wild Rags Records

This is basically stuff I've archived from the Wild Rags Records lastfm group I created but no longer run.

This is a group dedicated to the legendary Underground Metal label: Wild Rags Records. Also dedicated to their massive Mail Order Distribution, who - like me - turned a lot of heads on to the True Underground Metal scene of the late 80s/early 90s, which consisted of; demo tapes, 7" EPs, fanzines, tape trading, writing bands, getting involved, etc.

Wild Rags Records was an underground Metal label located in Montebello, California. It began in 1986 by one Mr. Richard C (Campos). In addition to releasing and licensing music Wild Rags was also a Record Store and International Mail Order Distro of Underground Metal music. This was supplemented by a bi-monthly zine/catalog called “The Wild Rag.” If I’m correct the store itself at one time was part clothing store (possibly started as a clothing store) and part Record store. Wild Rags seemed to thrive most during the early 90s (which was a strong period for Underground Metal indeed!). During this time is when WR released tons of great albums that remain cult classics to this day: Blasphemy, Impetigo, Nuclear Death, Blood, Hellwitch, Order From Chaos, to name a few. He also released and licensed many official pro-copied demos by many classic bands like, Brutality, Necrophobic, Unholy, Thergothon, Emperor, Sigh, Meat Shits, Candiria, etc. Some people seemed to shy away from the crudity of his releases. If you were used to your Metal bands having a more professional recording and slicker packaging, Wild Rags probably wasn't the label for you. As in the case with most of his bands the covers had a primitive DIY aesthetic while the recordings were usually low-fi and suffered (or benefited!) from bad production - I say the latter! ;-) To me (for example) an album like Nuclear Death’s “Bride of Insect” made more sense to me, than some glossy Roadracer Records release of that time. Nuclear Death “spoke” to me. They were much more blue-collar and relatable than say what Napalm Death and Carcass later became. While those bands were moving in a “safer” more commercial direction, I turned to bands like Nuclear Death, Impetigo and Blasphemy as they were much more down to earth, and they all seemed to share the same dedicated attitude of keeping the Metal; Underground, Uncompromising and Ugly as Hell! But seriously I wasn’t looking for Rock Stars or bands that got more popular with each release. I wanted bands that most people (even most Metalheads) just wouldn’t get...aside from the select few who were of the same depraved, libertine mindset as I....

The Mail Order side to Wild Rags was an extremely active and important branch of the operation. I will be as bold to say that during the early 90s WR was easily the biggest and best Distro for Underground Metal in North America (aside from maybe Metal Disc which was actually one of the biggest Underground Metal Distros of the 80s.) If you were deep into Underground Metal during that time, Wild Rags Records was on the cutting edge of introducing N. America to the onslaught of new Death/Grind/Black/Thrash/Doom Metal of that time period. They stocked all the classic imported (now hard to find vinyl) labels like: Earache, Nuclear Blast, Peaceville, Thrash Records, Seraphic Decay, Cogumelo, Osmose, Lethal Records, etc. They even carried all the old Slap A Ham classics at one time! In addition to all the official merchandise they carried, they also commissioned and sold tons and tons of demos from Underground/Un-signed bands from around the world. Also sold stack loads of zines, …any classic Zine you can think of, he mostly likely carried it at one time or another! He also used to slip free zines within your order most of the time as well, which was pretty awesome! I’ll also mention that the turnover time when ordering was super fast! Usually only about a week or so; now this was during the snail mail days long before the internet, so you gotta admit…that’s pretty darn fast! I would personally make a long-distance call the store and talk to Richard C himself. I was known as “Jason From Albuquerque.” So I would call, and he would set aside my order and I would send in a money order and get my order in about a weeks time. Big Thumbs Up!!!

Now I will state that Richard C became a very infamous and controversial character around the Underground Metal scene. Bad blood was in huge supply when it came to many of the bands that he dealt with. Since I am a Third Party, and was never in a band nor part of a deal that went south with Richard C I have no grounds to “talk any shit”….in fact I never once had a negative experience with the man, he as always super cool to me and I never had a single problem with his service. I personally will leave the controversial side of Wild Rags up in the air. Although, everything that has needed to be said has probably already been said by all parties involved and I believe most of the bad blood is ancient history now (maybe.) But if anyone wants to talk about this in the shout box,, feel free, I’ll leave that up to you…

As the 90s waned, trends shifted, many more burgeoning distros were active, and the onset of the internet was inevitable, Wild Rags seemed to had faded away. Now once again there are rumors as to why this happened (much of which involved Richard C’s questionable reputation - but once again I won’t post anything I don’t know the facts on) but somehow or another Wild Rags ended up as fading memory and a distant curiosity in the annals of Underground Metal history. I’m not exactly sure when Wild Rags shut down, nor which the final year was before they closed up shop for good. I’ll admit that by the mid-90s I had lost interest in Wild Rags, the releases just weren’t as interesting as they once were and his catalog wasn’t as strong as it once was, not…to mention my ordering habits and distro loyalties had shifted as well. The good thing though, is that many labels have taken up the slack in keeping some of the most renown WR albums in print, NWN and Razorback Records to name a few. It just goes to prove that timeless music never dies!!! In all honestly I wouldn’t change the way the Underground Metal scene is handled today via mostly the Internet. I’ve gotten too spoiled ordering things online via paypal and getting my stuff within in the week, also the benefit of having packages tracked, the immediacy of in-stock availability, messaging bands through email or myspace, etc. No, no...I just couldn’t go back to the days of dealing with just about everything through the post office. But I do romanticize about the days I was involved in the late 80s/early 90s Underground Metal scene. And I am glad and eternally appreciative that I got to live during those legendary times. Of course that nostalgia is what prompted me to start this group. ;-)

I’m going to call on anyone who might have additional information that you can think of that might be of value here and I’ll work it into this page. As you can see below, in the Active Discussions forum I have The Wild Rags Records discography listed. There wasn't an official one to be found on the web so I did the best I could to gather a cohesive list of all the Wild Rags releases (including all the official Pro-demo tapes). I basically used the Metal-Archives + Google as well as my own collection to get this far, but I know I’m probably missing plenty of stuff - especially from the mid/late 90s time period. If any of you know of more releases that need to be added to the list don’t hesitate to let me know! Also if you know some of the release codes/catalog #'s on those I don’t have marked down yet, please let me know that as well. THIS GROUP/PAGE WILL ALWAYS BE A WORK IN PROGRESS!
